THRESHOLD | Candleholder

This monolith candleholder is inspired by the Japanese idea of Kekkai, the boundary that marks the transition from the everyday world to another realm. Traditionally, Kekkai signals the moment one steps from the ordinary into the sacred, and this monolith interprets that idea in an architectural candleholder.  The form draws inspiration from brutalist architecture, using clear structure and raw geometry to give the boundary a physical and almost monumental presence.  When the candles are lit, the flame activates the boundary and brings the Kekkai to life.  The candle flames become a signal that you have crossed into a different atmosphere, a different state of mind or a different universe.
