Video Description Living in Indianapolis isn’t as boring as it might seem. Generally speaking, there are a healthy number of amazing bands routinely touring through town, which allows us the opportunity to to coerce them into recording an “Almost Live” session while they’re here. However, in early 2017, it just seemed like there was NO ONE touring through who we wanted for Almost Live... So, we decided to take matters into our own hands and fly the legendary Sonic Youth guitarist Lee Ranaldo into our little town for the sole purpose of recording this Almost Live session. I found out later that Lee had actually never been to Indy before... Lee arrived to our office around 3pm. After checking out the rooftop situation, Lee decided he would prefer to record indoors in our cavernous, converted power-plant of an office. I had never met Lee Ranaldo in person, though we had corresponded over email in the past (he was on our 2015 flexi series, and also contributed some nice words to a Half Japanese promo sticker and video). Lee decided to record the song “Circular (Right As Rain)”, from his upcoming album Electric Trim on Mute Records. Laying down the acoustic guitar and vocals in live takes. Lee first layered vocals, then percussion, then electric guitar, and even broke out my wife’s childhood piano (which was out of tune, and he used it that way.) I haven’t yet heard the album version of the song, but Lee describes this rendition as more stripped down. It’s an incredible song, and seeing this guy work in person, it’s obvious why he will go down in history as one of the great artists of our time. – Karl Hofstetter Curator, Joyful Noise Recordings Music by Lee Ranaldo Lyrics by Jonathan Lethem/Lee Ranaldo (Lazy Eight / Administered by Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing, BMI; Furry Girl Songs, BMI) Recorded live at Joyful Noise Recordings / April 2017 / by Postal Recordings: Tyler Watkins and Alex Kercheval Original version on forthcoming album Electric Trim, September 2017 on Mute Records Thanks: Jessica Clark, Getchell Amplifiers
