Video Description Almost Live: the Mountain Goats John Darnielle is one of the most insanely prolific artists we have ever met. And given our roster, that's saying a lot. John literally wrote this amazing song in his van, on the way to our office. According to John, he simply skimmed through an old computer folder called "new lyrics 2011" (apparently he keeps insane archives of unused lyrics), and hashed out the basic chord structure with his Roland 808 on his lap. I cannot overstate how badass this is, especially considering the caliber of what this song became... "From the Lake Trials" went from concept to creation in less than two hours. Having initially anticipated that the song would be played on guitar, John pivoted the minute he saw our out-of-tune office piano, and decided the slightly-off sound added some charm. So he opted to create the song using just piano, vocals, and enlisted Matt Douglas to hold the beat down with his trusty Roland 808 and implored him to "indulge your inner cheese" with his saxophone overdub. It was seriously magical.
