She was the first Black American woman symphonist in 1933, when her first of four symphonies was played by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Frederick Stock, conductor. She composed a large catalogue of works, including other orchestral music, piano concerto, 2 violin concertos, choral works, songs, spiritual arrangements, chamber music, a piano sonata and other piano works, organ music, and many piano teaching pieces. She was a pianist and organist.
