The figures, motifs, and themes of labor depicted in her work resolve to rewrite historical imagery with women at the forefront where traditionally only men were present. Wheat notes, "I wanted to make work where women did the heavy lifting and were running things. I felt empowered to reimagine our historical images and tell a different story". Wheat's work is influenced by the Native American culture she experienced near her childhood home in Oklahoma City.
