Signed on the bottom corner by pencil as 'Cham'. Text is in French: 'Le Cosaque: Mon honoeur est engage, je ne retirerai ma main qu'avec votre foulardet tout ce que vous avez dans votre poche!'. Cham was raised by a family who wished for him to attend a polytechnic school, he instead attended painting workshops hosted by Nicolas Charlet and Paul Delaroche and began work as a cartoonist.
