ABOUT THE DESIGN This design explores my German ancestry, with my great maternal and paternal grandparents having been born in the Neckar valley, an area formerly part of the Holy Roman Empire. Prior to attending the College of Charleston, I took Latin as my chosen foreign language (during college, I studied German). I have distinct memories of my middle school Latin books and think quite fondly back on them. I loved dissecting the origins of the English language in such an ancient way. It was the study of studying itself that drew me to the concept of this design. As the first individual in the history of mankind to create an encyclopedia, Pliny the Elder was fascinated with cataloguing things he found in his travels. Legend has it that the very first rose ever recorded was done so by Pliny on the island of Pompeii. It was a very simple five leaf dog rose, which is the most commonly found wild rose in the world. The sentiment behind this design is simplicity and universality; that we
