Hau The flowers of the Hau, Hibiscus tiliaceus, are very eye-catching; especially how they change from a neon yellow to different shades of peach.  But did you know the Hau plant has many uses, besides itʻs beauty?  A favorite part of the tree is the bark, when turned into ʻili hau (cordage); which can be used in everyday life. The wood is light enough to be used as parts of outrigger canoes.  The leaves can be used to make hāliʻi (blanket).  The flower bud and sap found inside of the flower can also be used medically as a mild laxative.  The list goes on for ways to use Hau.  How do you use Hau?  We enjoy using ʻili hau for stringing the lovely lei Kou.
