Techno Loafer Chair in Steel and Waxed Rubber

The Techno Loafer Chair by Xandre Kriel is a sculpture—and a lounge chair. Crafted in 8mm steel, the chair's monolithic base supports, in perfect tension, one continuous curve of soft and undulating rubber. Reliant on gravity and minimal joinery, the design and craftsmanship is informed by the Japanese technique of Sashimono: only two bolts are used in the chair's assembly. The juxtaposition of industrial materials—geometric steel and waxed rubber—results in an unexpectedly comfortable seat for 'loafing' in. The Techno Loafer hangs low, like a nostalgic camping chair, while its industrial form and materials conjure a futuristic vision.
