Decorative Tooling
This technique-focused class explores decorative tooling methods used in fine binding, with an emphasis on surface design and controlled mark-making. Students will work with both leather and cloth plaquettes, learning how tools, heat, and metal foils interact with different materials to create decorative effects. Rather than completing a bound book, the class is centered on experimentation and skill-building. Students will have time to practice techniques, observe how different surfaces respond, and refine their approach with guidance along the way. Decorative tooling is well suited to students who enjoy focused, hands-on work and are curious about adding decorative elements to future binding or book-related projects. Participants leave with finished samples and a new technique that can be applied across a range of materials and structures.
