Glorious Antique French Silk Damask Ecclesiastic Priest Robe with Cope Hood

This majestic cope (retaining the original brass medallions and chain closure) would have been worn during Lent or the Advent, purple represents penance, preparation, and sacrifice. It is French and dates towards 1890, purchased in the south of France (purchased within an ecclesiastical collection). Two shades and two patterns of purple silk damask have been used to create an impressive appearance from all sides. The ecclesiastic trim, both wide and narrow presents repeating purple crosses on a white (cotton) background. The cloak has a patch of hand sewn fortification (for worn or frayed areas) which is curious as it is done in a brown thread (use what was at hand) with very close and purposeful stitching (bottom center; we included a photo). This work (both the making of the vestment and the repair) was done by sisters or monks within a cloister or monastery close to the parish church.
