Irregular piano keys are a backfill surrounding a row of wonky spirals. For pantographs add 1/2" gap between rows, and possibly flip even rows on the horizontal, or for a shoji screen look, flip even rows on the vertical, with the quilt pinned up sideways. Great for a border as well.
