Antique French Carved Wood Smoking Chair with Embroidered Upholstery ca. 1900

This wonderful antique French carved wood smoking chair (or chaise de fumeur), which people sat astride when smoking cigars or pipes. This piece features elaborate carvings on the back showing a face above two carved tobacco pipes and a pouch of tobacco along with scroll work and other details. The base of the chair also has turned details and an X base with decorative finial at center. There is a shell shaped carved detail at the front-center of the seat base and carved rosettes at the top of each leg. The chair has padded top rail and seat in upholstery, which is also quite detailed, showing playing cards and a heraldic-style badge at center surrounded by florals along with the card suite symbols along the edge of the top cushion. The colors of the upholstery include green, blue, yellow, white, red and black along with touches of pinks and browns in the flowers and the shield on the seat. Chair measures 19"W x 16"D x 31.5"H. The seat height is 17"; seat depth 14.5"; seat width 18".
