The Black Mission Fig Tree is one of the most beloved and widely recognized fig varieties in the world. Brought to California by Franciscan friars in the late 1700s and planted near Spanish missions (hence the name), this fig has stood the test of time for both its flavor and adaptability. This variety produces large, teardrop-shaped fruit with deep purple to black skin and a soft, light red interior. The flesh is jammy and richly flavored, delivering a robust berry taste accented by hints of other fruits like melon and plum. It’s no surprise that Black Mission is considered one of the best figs for fresh eating, drying, or preserving—it offers an unbeatable combination of sweetness, depth, and texture. While Black Mission is a dependable and rewarding tree, it does require a bit of patience. It’s not the fastest grower and may take a few years to begin producing ripe figs. However, once it establishes, it becomes a reliable producer of high-quality fruit.
