Why Grow Chianti Onion? Most Impressive Red Onion Chianti is simply the most impressive short-day red onion we've ever found. This hybrid variety produces colossal red onions with a slightly-flattened, granex shape. Not only are they huge, but they are also the most bolt-resistant red onions we've found. Red onions are notorious for going to seed, but these just keep growing. Great for Pickling Unlike other red onion varieties, Chianti doesn't have as much spice or "bite." They're relatively sweet for a red onion and are great for eating raw or making pickled onions. When fed and watered well, these onions can easily get 5-6" in diameter and sometimes larger. We regularly grow 1.5-2 lb onions with this excellent red onion variety.
