Antique Grain Measure – Restored and Newspaper-Lined (1883 / 1893)
Measures approximately: 15" Wide by 6" Tall This is an antique grain measure that Trish and I found at a local antique shop. The piece had great character, but the bottom board had been replaced at some point with a poorly fitted one, and the lower portion showed damage from where the original bottom had been removed. The overall look of the measure was too good to leave behind, so I brought it home and restored it. I removed the replacement board, trimmed the lower edge to remove the damaged areas. I then fitted a new, sturdy bottom board. Instead of trying to artificially age the new wood, I decided to line both the interior and the new bottom with original antique newspapers. The interior is lined with The American Cultivator, dated June 2, 1883, featuring detailed agricultural advertisements, tools, implements, cattle listings, and a bold masthead.
