Mantilla Sofa

Designed in 1974 by Kazuhide Takahama for Simon Gavina, the Mantilla takes its name from the fabric mantles draped over furniture in Italian holiday homes during the long winter months. A generous cream velvet sofa with a chenille texture, where the upholstery drapes over the frame like a protective covering rather than being pulled taut around it. The plywood base and polyurethane foam structure give it a low, grounded profile that reads both relaxed and formal. The velvet was reupholstered three years ago and has been gently used since.
