An Avocado in South Carolina? With some coddling, it just might be true! 'Joey' is an exceptionally heavy fruit bearer, offering an egg-shaped fruit with purplish-black skin. 'Joey' is cold hardy to about 15 degrees, meaning that it will over-winter successfully in the majority of SC winters. However, to be safe it may be best to plant 'Joey' in a large container to bring indoors when an arctic freeze comes our way. Fruit is produced at an early age, sometimes within 3-4 years, and ripens in the late summer or early fall. Plants are self-fertile but will have an even heavier fruit set when planted with others.
