Keeping dry in the rain while hiking is more than just a challenge.  You either get wet from the outside by the rain or you get wet from sweat from the inside. Even though “waterproof breathable” jackets are a truly novel technology and work well in the laboratory, they just don’t seem to work in the field.  Dirt and dust from the trail will clog numerous pores in the external fabric, your pack and straps cover a significant portion jackets surface area preventing vapor transfer, and the rain drops also cover another large portion of the remaining surface of the jacket.  These “waterproof breathable” products require a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating that washes off over time and use and must be renewed periodically to regain water repellency.  Most of these DWR coatings contain PFAS (often referred to as “forever chemicals”) and may contaminate groundwater.   These jackets will often wet-out over time.
