The 'Solo' varieties are valued for productivity, uniform fruit shape and size, and excellent fruit quality. 'Solo' strains are predominantly self-pollinated and thus are highly inbred and uniform. Hawaiian Solo Papaya The Hawaiian Solo papaya cultivars are called “solo” types because they are usually small enough to be eaten by one person alone. Hawaii’s solo papayas have 1 to 3-pound fruits with flesh that is either “red” or “yellow.” Cultivars with red flesh are ‘Sunrise’, ‘Sunset’, and ‘UH SunUp’ (a genetically transformed ‘Sunset’). Yellow-fleshed cultivars are ‘Waimanalo’, ‘Kapoho’, and ‘UH Rainbow’, which is a cross between ‘Kapoho’ and ‘UH SunUp’.
