Its melodic and harmonic themes represent little children at play, and in the end, at rest. The inspiration for this piece came when my wife was expecting our second child. It is through-composed, coming to life slowly in the first section as the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic ideas are established. I imagine this being the time when children are just waking up to start the day. This leads to the middle section, which features playful, abrupt exchanges between the instruments. At this point playtime is in full force with laughter, running, and busy chatter. The final section gradually calms down, replacing the constant activity and louder volumes with a simple, soft chord progression, played first by the vibraphone and then joined by the marimba as the music fades.
