Creative Writing for ESL Learners: Telling Your Story on Social Media for ages 13-16 ~ with Kenya Nelson

Are there photographs or videos you’d like to share on social media with your English speaking followers, but language is a barrier? Learn how to tell stories with pictures using descriptive captions, images, & graphics on Instagram, TikTok, and more!In this workshop, expert Kenya Nelson combines creative writing with ESL learning that will help you create captivating posts, build your vocabulary, and get sentence level writing practice at the same time. You will learn how to look at photographs and use creative language to come up with exciting stories you can share on social media.We will focus on a few select areas of grammar such as writing in the present progressive and past tense, using prepositions of place, using complex adjective phrases, using “there is” sentence constructions, writing about causes and effects, and more.Kenya Nelson is the author of Ungrateful, featuring a main character who is an alternative representation to mainstream media’s portrayal of Black women. She holds a Masters in TESOL as well as a Bachelor’s in English. For her graduate research, she focused on Critical Race Theory and how it can be applied in the ESL classrooms, developing a research framework for teachers to explore and decolonize racial ideologies in ESL education. This research study was selected to be used in the Capstone Graduate course at Hamline University. Kenya is currently serving on the International TEFL Academy alumni committee board.
