Shells by the Shore
Walking the beach and looking for treasures at the feet is one of my favorite island activities! My grandmother was the same way. At Little Gasparilla Island in the room forever known as “Grammy’s Room,” rests a massive collection of shells collected over the years from there, and Boca Grande. Each wicker basket meticulously separating a certain variety. Sand dollars in one, banded tulips and pear whelks in the other. One jar containing sharks teeth, and another containing scores of coquinas. I imagine the countess hours she spent on the beach to amass such a collection - walking, stooping, sorting, and storing for the “future craft project” ... or just for the sheer joy of collecting. It’s such a perfect image in my head of many perfect island hours spent without a care for the outside world.
