Waves slamming against the old lighthouse, and a breeze carrying the scent of mourning flowers. Notes of ocean breezes, lily of the valley, mild rose, cyclamen, sandalwood, sea kelp, bergamot, citrus zest, and just a hint of clove and pepper. The Pointe aux Barques lighthouse on the shore of Lake Huron in Michigan was constructed in 1848. Though it had many keepers, perhaps most notable was Catherine Shook, the first female light keeper in Michigan. Catherine took over the duty after the passing of her husband, Peter.
