Phantoms occur when something alters the surface of a quartz crystal while it is forming, and as the quartz continues to grow it leaves that altered surface as a sort of record of its growth. If another mineral is deposited onto the surface of the crystal, that mineral will appear as a phantom crystal. Sometimes different levels of radiation during a crystal's formation will lead to color zoning such as smoky phantoms.
