Organic Green Yerba Mate Our Organic Green Yerba Mate is from the Mato Grosso state in Brazil. An organic green, unroasted mate offering the authentic gaucho experience.  Full-bodied with a slight wild, bitter earthy taste, and grassy oak notes. Rich in mateine, Yerba Mate was used as caffeine in Latin America before coffee. Made from the evergreen shrub Ilex paraguayensis, a relative of the common Holly, Yerba Mate is indigenous to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Yerba Mate has been used by natives for centuries as a sustaining beverage through drought and famine. Jesuit missionaries also realized the economic potential of this beverage and started plantations back in the mid-1600s. Similarly, Yerba Mate is traditionally drunk from a gourd or mate and sipped through a straw known as a bombilla.
