The Blue Moose was opened around 1970 by longtime Aspen couple, Jim and Lila Gibbons. Jim was recently retired from an NFL career with the Detroit Lions and had recently moved his young family to Aspen. The bar and eatery was located in the basement in what was then the Mt. Plaza Building at Cooper & Galena Sts. And this being the 70s, and a live-music spot, lots of notable musicians played there, including Mr. Rocky Mountain High himself, John Denver (a golfing buddy of Jim’s).
