Sunny Murray, a pivotal free jazz drummer, defied conventions by liberating the drums from their traditional timekeeping role. He was a crucial figure in ESP-Disk's debut jazz release, "Ayler's Spiritual Unity." For his 1966 ESP leader session, Murray assembled an outstanding ensemble. French trumpeter Jacques Coursil, known for his New Orleans jazz-inspired powerful tone, made a remarkable recording debut. Byard Lancaster, another Philadelphian, offered standout saxophone solos on his first recording. This album also featured an enigmatic second altoist, Jack Graham, contributing to its unique two-alto sound. Notably, bassist Alan Silva, who had previously worked with Cecil Taylor, further enriched the ensemble's depth.
