He was the artist behind the amazing illustrations in William Curtis' "Flora Londinenis" an important 18th century English botany book. Kilburn was also a designer of calico textile prints.  Kilburn's seaweed motifs were so iconic that he presented a dress in the pattern to Queen Charlotte! The reason his work feels familiar to a modern audience is his influence on the arts and crafts movement and the fact that his work is widely copied both in his own lifetime and today. William fought unsuccessfully for copyright protection for artists and illustrators during his lifetime but laid the groundwork for copyright protection for artists as we know it today.
