It features silk fabric that has been expertly dyed using beni, a pigment derived from safflower petals and adorned with metallic gold lacquer. Originating from the Edo period (1615-1868), this kimono design was originally used in the traditional Noh theatrical style. The term karaori specifically refers to the intricately embroidered women's kimono that was synonymous with Noh performances. Interestingly, it was Noh that first captured the attention of David Byrne from the iconic band Talking Heads while on tour in Japan.
