It was a prized possession of Akan women in West Africa. It is an Adinkra symbol that represents femininity, beauty, and cleanliness. It is a symbol of feminine consideration or good feminine qualities such as patience, prudence, fondness, love, and care. Adinkra symbols were originally created by the Bono people of Gyaman. They were named after the Gyaman King Nana Kwado Agyemang Adinkra. The symbols were later adopted into the proverbial lexicon of the Ashanti peoples of West Africa.
