Carnac, in Brittany North West France, has 10,000 standing stones also known as menhirs. These were erected during the Neolithic period 4500-200BC with the main activity in circa 3300BC. One interpretation of the site is that it was visited by successive generations who each erected a stone in honour of the ancestors.
