Tolkien drew inspiration from the Atlantis myth when creating Númenor, envisioning it as a powerful and advanced civilization that ultimately fell due to its inhabitants' hubris and defiance of the gods. This star-shaped island, situated in the middle of the Great Sea between Middle-earth and Aman, was meant to signify the pinnacle of human achievement and its tragic downfall, mirroring the legendary lost city of Atlantis.
