The Rosetta Stone was originally part of a larger stone slab that was used as a building material in the construction of Fort Julien near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) in Egypt. When it was discovered by French soldiers in 1799 during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, it was being reused in the walls of the fort. This repurposing likely contributed to its preservation, as many other similar inscriptions did not survive due to erosion and destruction over time.
