Athletic shorts were a status symbol. They meant that you did your running inside a fitness club, with clean floors and filtered air and Olympic medalists manning the desks. To be fair, shorts could also mean you were in the category of people who could sweat outdoors for prolonged periods and not have their exposed skin react with any of the lingering radiation in the air, but that was only about 2% of the population nowadays.
