The ceremony, held in late September, begins with a potluck dinner. Each family brings their favorite homemade food — berry pies, nut breads, and leafy salads. After dinner, one doe is crowned the “Autumn Empress,” an honorary title for a female deer who worked hard to help the ceremony come together. The Empress is crowned with a feather headdress, complete with beads and sunflowers. Finally, the deer finish off the evening with a dance around the campfire.
