Eustis Limequat Tree For Sale Available in both 1 gallon and 3 gallon sizes. Eustis Limequat is the most commonly available limequat – and for good reason. This cross between the Marumi kumquat and the West Indian (Key) lime looks and tastes almost exactly like a Key lime, but grows on a tree that is much hardier than typical limes. Of all citrus, limes are perhaps the most sensitive to cold, often freezing to the ground in temperatures in the upper 20sF. Realizing this, Dr. Walter Swingle of the United States Department of Agriculture made crosses in 1909 and selected the best for release. Three of these sister hybrids are still with us today: Eustis, Lakeland, and Tavares. Of these, the Eustis limequat became very popular as a dooryard plant, and proving itself to be at least as hardy as a sweet orange.
