This cultivar is not an orange x kumquat hybrid, as its name implies, but rather a Satsuma mandarin x Meiwa kumquat. The Nippon Orangequat produces a beautiful, deep orange colored fruit that is about the size of a small egg. It has a thick, spongy peel that can be eaten. The fruit is very juicy and the juice is very sour. The principal advantages of the Nippon Orangequat are that it tends to produce multiple crops, and the fruit mature early and hold exceptionally well on the tree. In mild climates, it would be possible for Nippon Orangequat to have fruit all year long. Although the fruit is sour, Nippon Orangequat can be used as a lemon, and with its slight orange taste makes an excellent substitute for Meyer lemon.
