The season starts sometime in August, when the sun still beats down, and heat waves rise from the earth. It progresses through species from antelope and elk to whitetail deer, upland birds and waterfowl. The weather cools, snow falls and ice forms across much of the U.S. Many people plan their vacations around these seasons, taking a week or even two to camp in the backcountry or to stay at a series of roadside motels. While hunting seasons look different for almost everybody, the common thread of anticipation runs through each one. We also have a tendency to get stuck in ruts. I hunt the same areas for the same species year after year. On one hand, that’s a good thing. It makes us more proficient, helps us learn more about the animal and leads to greater success.
