Vairocana Buddha by Lok Chitrakar
This work by celebrated artist Lok Chitrakar is of Vairocana, the Primordial or Supreme Buddha. He is seen as the embodiment of the concept of ‘emptiness’ and is a personification of the dharmakaya - everything, unmanifested, free of characteristics and distinctions. Vairocana is white, representing all colors. This fabulous painting is one in a series of the Five Dhyani, or Wisdom, Buddhas. The Five Dhanyi Buddhas each represents a different aspect of enlightened consciousness to aid in spiritual transformation. This lovely piece displays Chitrakar’s mastery of the 13th - 16th century Newar Design style through its precise lines and traditional iconography. This original thangka, or paubha in Nepal, is painted in the traditional manner with ground mineral pigments on primed cotton canvas.
