The Candela Table is an homage to Felix Candela, a pioneer architect who pushed the boundaries of concrete during the 1950s in Mexico. Just as Candela did for structural concrete in his time, the concept utilizes Glass Fiber-Reinforced Concrete, GFRC, to create an otherwise impossible design in concrete. The design holds a strong bond with Mexican modernism, reinterpreting it to a contemporary furniture design for interior and exterior spaces. Using Candela’s concept of cascarones — thin shells made out of reinforced concrete — the design exploits the features of GFRC in its light and fluid form. The geometric hypars are an elegant expression of the enduring work of structural design in concrete. The coffee table’s edges float in waves, topped by a glass surface that allows visibility of the concrete body. Using the same geometric reasoning, the waves are truncated to form a side table.
