Mt St Helens | Profile Map

Mt St Helens, and it's famous eruption, are a major touchstone of northwest culture. Anybody living in the PNW in 1980 can tell you exactly where they were when the massive eruption came.  This profile map shows the northern slopes. Profile Maps show a familiar outline in a new perspective. These maps are made by creating a digital 3D model, using the same high resolution elevation data as our birds-eye view maps. This model can be rotated, allowing the map to be viewed in profile. Profile maps have a photographic quality, but all shading is from the elevation data. Rock, glacier, meadow are all shaded based solely by elevation.
