Best known for flavorful vanilla and exquisite pearls, Tahiti one of several atolls that comprise the islands of French Polynesia. Our eight-day “layover” on our trek from Australia to home in the U.S. afforded us the experience of a lifetime. We hiked through lush vegetation toward the peak of the old volcano, ate fresh poke, and slept in over-water bungalows while fish swished beneath. The natural swimming pool created by the coral rim offered an aquatic playground unmatched by any man-made resort amenity.
