Fargesia Murielae Bamboo

Fargesia Murielae 'Umbrella' Bamboo   The common name of this bamboo, Umbrella bamboo, describes its graceful, arching habit.  It is one of the most cold hardy bamboos available.  It does very well in most parts of the U.S., with the exception of the Southeast where the combination of height heat and high humidity prevents it from thriving.  The murielae will quickly form a dense hedge.  New culms (canes) are light blue with tan sheathing.  Like all of the other Fargesia that we sell, it does not have running rhizomes and needs no containment to prevent it from spreading.  It does need dappled shade throughout the day to look its best.  High heat mixed with high humidity would probably be fatal for the Fargesia, so this might not be a plant for those in the southeast states.  Try instead, any of our Bambusa multiplex or Thamnocalamus.
