Phyllostachys Nigra Black Bamboo 'Hale' Phyllostachys nigra is the quintessential black bamboo.  If you want a pure black bamboo, this is the one you want to order. Nigra bamboo has ebony black culms after a few years.  The new culms emerge green, fading sometimes to yellow, before turning all black.  Foliage is lush, green and smaller.  Unless there are ideal conditions, Black bamboo will grow to 20′-30′.  Black is native to Taiwan and Japan.  It is hardy to around 0° F.  It has a somewhat weeping habit, mostly due to the abundance of foliage high up on the culms.  Legging up would make the culms a little more erect.  Black bamboo is generally a slower grower, especially as a young plant.  Great for groves and screens.Phyllostachys NigraCommon name: Black bamboo, KurochikuHeight x Diameter:     Ht. 20-35'x3”.Synonyms:  Phyllostachys puberula var. nigra, Bambusa nigraMinimum temperature:   Hardy to 0° F.USDA zone 7-10Light:  Full sun.Culm:  Green fading to yellow then black.Uses:  Hedg
