Scottish Bothy

WHAT’S A BOTHY?  The Scottish bothy is a rudimentary shelter in the wilderness where you can stay for free — or in these days, very inexpensive if someone is renting it out on Air BnB. Bothy comes from the Gaelic word ‘bothan’ meaning hut and were originally (and some still are) used for accommodation for farm labourers or estate workers who looked after livestock or crops. Bothies are generally croft houses or estate cottages, previously ruined, that have been simply renovated to provide basic accommodation. Traditionally, they do not have any electricity or running water. During our honeymoon in 2018, my husband and I stayed in a bothy nearby Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland.
