Tuesday morning around 11, behind the IKEA in Red Hook, I found a small park right on the water. At the very end of the pier was a deep-red tugboat moored quietly against a backdrop of brick buildings. The wind kept lifting my paper, forcing me to constantly push it down—but otherwise, the place was strangely calm. After I finished the drawing, I looked up and realized I was completely alone—a surreal moment in New York City. Brush, ink, and watercolor capture not just the tugboat’s vivid red, but the quiet tension of that solitary hour on an empty pier.
