Tadamasa - Famous Kabuki Makeup

Torii Tadamasa Genroku Period Makeup of Kamakura Gongorô for the Protagonist of Shibaraku Worn by Saigyu from Famous Kabuki Makeup, Second Series. Note: This was the makeup devised by [Ichikawa] Saigyû Danjûrô I (才牛団十郎). Tadamasa was born Katsumi Ueno. His work combined images of popular Kabuki actors in key roles with western influences to create unique, prints. His first teacher, Torii Kiyotada, allowed Ueno to use ‘tada’, from his name, to form the basis of Ueno’s first name, Tadamasa. His next teacher, Torii VII, allowed him to use their family name; making Tadamasa Ueno, Tadamasa Torii in 1949.Play: Shibaraku (暫)  Date: 1941 or 1942 Condition: Good color and impression, not backed, some repairs on corners as shown.
