Tadamasa - Eighteen Master Plays of Kabuki
Torii Tadamasa No.13. "Uiro-uri". A salesman of the popular medicine, "Uiro". In the original play; the actor made a long, rapid speech about the history and effects of the medicine. A dance performance has substituted this eloquent speech on the stage nowadays. Tadamasa was born Katsumi Ueno. His work combined images of popular Kabuki actors in key roles with western influences to create unique, prints. His first teacher, Torii Kiyotada, allowed Ueno to use ‘tada’, from his name, to form the basis of Ueno’s first name, Tadamasa. His next teacher, Torii VII, allowed him to use their family name; making Tadamasa Ueno, Tadamasa Torii in 1949.
