Tsukioka Yoshitoshi An impressive print of Hangaku, a Woman Warrior. From the series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors. A famous female general of the Genpei War, Hangaku Gozen. Hangaku allied with the Taira clan. The daughter of the samurai Jo no Sukemori, she raised an army in the 12th century to help overthrow the Kamakura Shogunate, but was defeated and sent to Kamakura for execution. The series dates from the end of Yoshitoshi's career, when he was about forty-four. It thus dates from very shortly before his well-known masterpieces such as his great series "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" (1885-1892).
